I begin Side lying Treatments at 13 weeks. I Never use belly cushions for clients . The following information is why I use the Side lying method. If you do prefer the belly cushion please call Clinics and enquire to ensure they have practitioners that use them.

Prone Position - Issues with :
Holes in tables, Belly Pillows, Pillow props, body cushions
These Alternatives either.
(1) Further strain the taxed uterine ligaments especially the Sacro-uterine ligaments by dangling the uterus from these attachments
Or
(2) Create increased intrauterine pressure particularly when sufficient pressure is applied to therapeutically address the posterior structures.
Intra-uterine pressure probably not a significant safety concern during first trimester
More caution
- Particular Relevance Abnormalities in placenta attachment or function
- Fetal Blood Supply or Uterine competence
- Pressure on Breasts which are often tender and sensitive

Safety Considerations, Uterus Rests against the inferior vena cava. The major vessel of blood return to the heart runs up the right side of the vertebral bodies , along the posterior abdominal walls.
Extended compression of the vena cava will result in low maternal blood pressure and decreased circulation both to mother and baby. ( supine hyptensive sydnrome)
Can experience, uneasiness, dizziness, shortness of breath.
Decreased Fetal circulation if placenta is embedded posteriorly.
Prior 22 weeks pillow can be placed under right side to shift uterine weight to the left.
Can aggravate sacroiliac joint

Supported by pillows, bolsters and or cushions
- Reduced strain on the Uterine Ligaments or the Musculoskeletal structures is minimised.
- Dangerously increased intrauterine pressure is avoided.
